Ginger/இஞ்சி Theeyal

This is a well known dish in our hometown. It is one of the popular side dishes served with the vegetarian meals in the wedding feasts. Ginger is very good for digestion. My mom often make this ginger theeyal at home in the traditional way. Now a days people (including me) make ginger theeyal in easier ways, they also taste good. I will try to post a different recipe later, but first my mom’s traditional recipe is here; enjoy!


  • Ginger —————————– 3 pieces
  • Grated coconut ————— 3 tsp
  • Coriander seeds ————- 2 tabs
  • Dry chili ————————— 2
  • Cumin seeds ——————- 1/2 tsp
  • Turmeric powder ———– 1/4 tsp
  • Tamarind juice ————— 1/4 cup ( juice from small lime size tamarind )
  • Jaggery —————————-1 small piece
  • Salt to taste
  • Seasoning
  • Mustard seeds —————– 1/2 tsp
  • Dry chilies ———————— 2
  • Curry leaves ——————— 2 springs

How to make

  • Take the skin off from the ginger and mince it (I use the chopper to mince the ginger)
  • Place a thick bottom pan on the stove in medium heat
  • Pour a teaspoon of oil and add all the ingredients expect jaggery, tamarind water and salt
  • Saute for about 5 minutes and turn off the stove
  • Wait for it to cool little bit and grind it to a smooth paste using a mixer / blender
  • Then transfer the paste back to the pan
  • Add the tamarind water, 1 cup of water and salt
  • Mix them well and cook until the theeyal becomes thick (about 7 minutes)
  • Now add the jaggery and wait until it melts
  • Then do the seasoning
  • Place a small pan on the stove in medium heat
  • Add oil, once it is hot, add the mustard seeds and wait until it crackles
  • Now add the curry leaves and dry chilies
  • Pour this into the ginger theeyal
  • The tasty ginger theeyal is ready to serve
  • You can store this in the refrigerator up to 10 days
