Every house in our hometown has at least one papaya tree in the backyard. Most of the times, we eat them after the fruits are ripe, but when we don’t have any vegetables to make a side dish for rice, the raw papayas come in handy to make a poriyal. When I went to the Indian grocery store, I saw raw papayas and bought one to make poriyal, so today I am writing this recipe for making it.
Ingredients
- Raw papaya ————————– 1 medium size
- Grated coconut ——————— 1/4 cup
- Turmeric powder —————— 1/4 tsp
- Chili powder ————————– 1/2 tsp
- Salt to taste
For tempering
- Mustard seeds —————- 1/2 tsp
- Cumin seeds ——————- 1/2 tsp
- Split urad dal ——————- 1 tbsp
- Curry leaf ————————- 1 spring
- Cooking oil ———————- 2 tsp
How to make
- Peel the skin from the papaya, cut it into 4 pieces and remove all the seeds
- Use a grater to grate the papaya

- Place a pan on the stove in medium heat
- Add oil and mustard seeds
- Once mustard seeds crackle, add the urad dal, cumin seeds and curry leaf
- Then add the grated papaya and stir fry for 5 minutes
- Add chili powder, turmeric powder and salt
- Mix them well
- Then add the grated coconut and mix again
- Cook for one more minute and switch off the stove
- Now it should be ready to serve
