Green Jack Fruit (Chakka) Kootu

One of my all time favorite dishes, also my daughter’s favorite too. This one, I made from frozen jack fruit seeds and tender green jack fruit. In our home town we called the jackfruit as “chakka”. Whenever I make this recipe, I feel like home.

Ingredients

  • Jack fruit seeds ————————— 1 lb
  • Tender green jack fruit ————— 1 lb
  • Chili powder ——————————– 1/2 tsp
  • Turmeric powder ———————— 1/4 tsp
  • Water ——————————————– 1 cup
  • Salt to taste
  • For Grinding
  • Grated coconut —————————- 1/4 cup
  • Garlic cloves ——————————– 4
  • Pepper corns ——————————– 10
  • Cumin seeds ——————————– 1/2 tsp
  • Curry leaves ——————————— 1 spring
  • For Seasoning
  • Curry leaves ——————————— 2 springs
  • Mustard seeds —————————— 1/2 tsp
  • Cooking oil ———————————— 1 tsp

How to make

  • Thaw the jack fruit green and cut it into medium size pieces
  • Coarsely grind the things under “For Grinding”, using a mixer/blender
  • In a pressure cooker add the jack fruit, jack fruit seeds, chili powder, turmeric powder, salt and a cup of water
  • Cook for about 10 minutes or two whistles
  • Turn off the stove
  • Once it cools down, open the pressure cooker, add the coconut paste and mix them well
  • Switch on the stove and cook for couple of more minutes
  • Now do the seasoning
  • Keep a small pan on the stove in medium heat
  • Add oil and mustard seeds
  • Once it crackles add the curry leaves
  • Now pour this into the chakka kootu
  • The tasty chakka kootu is ready to serve

  • I used the daily delight jack fruit green and Viswas jackfruit seed (sliced)
