Paruppu curry (Dal curry)

Today’s recipe is paruppu curry (dal curry)

  • Ingredients
    • 1/4 cup thoor dal
    • 1/4 cup green gram dal
    • 6 shallots
    • 3 garlic pods
    • 1 /2 tsp turmeric powder
    • 1 tsp cumin seeds
    • 2 green chilies
    • 1/4 cup grated coconut
    • salt to taste
  • For seasoning
    • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
    • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
    • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
    • 2 shallots (cut it into small pieces)
    • 2 red chilies
    • curry leaf

How to make

  • Take a pressure cooker and add the dals
  • Dry roast the dals for few minutes and add 2.5 cups of water
  • Then add the shallots, garlic pods and turmeric powder
  • Close the pressure cooker lid and keep it in the medium flame
  • Wait for two whistles and switch off the stove
  • In the mean time, grind the coconut, green chilies and cumin seeds into a coarse mixture (please do not make a smooth paste)
  • Once the pressure is released, open the cooker and add the coconut mixture into the dal and cook it for another 5 minutes without closing the cooker
  • Take a small frying pan, add the oil and mustard seeds
  • Once the mustard seeds start crackling, add the remaining seasoning items to it.
  • Then pour the seasoning on the dal curry in the cooker
  • Now it is ready to serve with rice
