How to prepare puttu flour (steamed rice cake flour)

Today I am posting about preparing the puttu flour from the scratch. This way you will get a soft and very tasty puttu.


  • White raw rice 1 cup
  • Red raw rice 1/2 cup

How to make

  • Soak the rices in water for 3 hours
  • After soaking, use a strainer to remove the water  
  • Take a mixer and grind it into medium fine powder
  • Use a sifter or sieve with medium porous mesh for shifting the flour, so that the flour is little coarse
  • Take a wide pan and heat it in medium heat
  • Add the flour and stir it occasionally, do this for 10 minutes
  • Make sure that the flour is not sticking at the bottom
  • Now the flour should be ready
  • Wait for the flour to cool down before using
  • It can be stored in the refrigerator for a week


  • You can use full white or red raw rice too
  • I personally like to mix them
  • If you use white raw rice alone, it will be in full white color
  • If you use red raw rice alone, it will be too dark
  • You should try all the 3 types, they will be in different color and different taste as well
