Mussels Thoran

When I was in India last month, I got the chance to cook and eat fresh mussels. One of my favorite dishes to make with mussels is a thoran — we locally call it as “Chippi thoran”. This dish, especially when it is made with fresh mussels, tastes really good!

I already posted the recipe for fried mussels in an earlier post, but shown the pictures below for showing the difference between mussel fry made from fresh versus frozen mussels. The fresh ones were bought in a fish market near the seashore in India and the frozen were bought from the frozen aisle in a grocery store in Minnesota. If you want the recipe for the mussel fry, here is the link to my older post.

Ingredients

  • Cooked and cleaned mussels ——– around 2 lb (cut it into small pieces)
  • Shallots ——————————————– 1 lb (cut it into small sizes)

  • Coriander powder ————————— 1/4 tbs
  • For grinding
    • Grated coconut ————————— 1/2 cup
    • Cumin seeds ——————————- 1/2 tbs
    • Garlic ——————————————- 3 pods
  • For Tempering
    • Mustard seeds —————————– 1/2 tbs
    • Green chilies ——————————- 2 (cut length wise)
    • Curry leaves ——————————— 4 to 5 springs

How To Make

  • Place a pan on the stove in medium heat
  • Add oil
  • Add the mustard seeds and wait until it crackles
  • Add the curry leaves and green chilies
  • Add the sliced shallots and saute for 3 minutes
  • Then add the mussels, chili powder, turmeric powder and coriander powder
  • Add very little amount of salt (mussels naturally have salt in it)
  • Saute them for another 4 to 5 minutes
  • Add the grated coconut and mix them well
  • Cook for 2 more minutes
  • Switch off the stove
  • Now the tasty mussels thoran is ready to eat
