Anchovy (Nethili) Fish Thoran

In our hometown, anchovy is a very common fish. You can find it in the fish markets in all the seasons. In some seasons, only anchovy fish will be available. So not to get bored with the fish curry, we make different dishes using the anchovy fish and this thoran is one of them. This is very tasty when made with a lot of shallots and coconut.

In Minnesota, we get the frozen anchovy fish. Whenever I keep the fish for thawing, our cat patiently waits near that to get the fish. He likes to eat the uncooked fish.


  • Anchovy fish ——————————– 2 lb
  • Shallots —————————————– 1 lb
  • Grated coconut —————————- 1/4 cup
  • Cumin seeds ——————————— 1/2 tsp
  • Green chilies ——————————– 2
  • Chili powder ——————————— 1 tsp
  • Coriander powder ———————— 1 1/2 tsp
  • Turmeric powder ————————- 1/4 tsp
  • Tamarind juice —————————— 5 tsp
  • Cooking oil ———————————— 1 tbsp
  • Salt to taste
  • For Tempering
  • Mustard seeds —————————— 1 tsp
  • Curry leaves ——————————— 4 springs

How To Make

  • Cook the fish with little water (about 1/2 cup), salt and turmeric powder for about 10 minutes and keep it aside
  • Heat the oil in a pan and add the curry leaves and green chilies
  • Add the shallots and stir fry for about 10 minutes until the shallots start to brown
  • Now add the cooked fish, chili powder and coriander powder and saute for few minutes
  • Then add the tamarind juice and mix it well
  • After couple of minutes, add the grated coconut and cumin seeds
  • Mix them well and cook for couple more minutes and switched off the stove
  • Now the tasty fish thoran is ready to serve
