Black chana curry

Today I made puttu (steamed rice cake) and chana curry for breakfast, it is one of the healthy foods. It is a common south Indian food. Today I am going to write the recipe of chana curry.

Ingredients

  • Black chana 2 cups
  • Turmeric powder 1/2 tsp
  • Chili (cayenne pepper) powder 1 tsp
  • Coriander powder 1/2 tsp
  • Garam masala 1/2 tsp
  • Black pepper powder 1/4 tsp
  • Garlic pods 3
  • Grated coconut 1/3 cup
  • Salt 2 tsp (you should change it according to your taste)
  • For seasoning
    • Vegetable oil 1 tbsp
    • Dry chilies 2
    • Thinly sliced ginger 1 tbsp
    • Curry leaves 1
    • Cumin seeds 1/2 tsp
    • Mustard seeds 1/2 tsp

How to make

  • Soak the chana for 12 hours
  • Take a pressure cooker and add the soaked chana, salt and water
  • Keep the stove in medium heat and cook for 3 whistles
  • Switch off the stove and when the pressure is released, open the cooker
  • In the mean time grind the grated coconut with garlic and other spices (turmeric powder, chili powder, coriander powder, garam masala and black pepper power)
  • Grind them into a coarse mixture and add the mixture into the cooked chana
  • Switch on the stove and cook for 3 more minutes with the cooker lid open
  • Take a small pan and heat it in medium heat
  • Add the oil and mustard seeds and once it crackles, add the other seasoning items
  • Add this into the chana curry, now it is ready to serve
  • It will go with chapatti or rice too, but I like to eat with puttu
