Cabbage and green gram poriyal

This is a tasty side dish for rice, which can be made with simple ingredients.


  1. Grated cabbage – 2 cups
  2. Grated coconut – 1/4 cups
  3. Cooked green gram – 1 cup
  4. Onion – 1/2 (dice it into small pieces)
  5. Green chili – 1 (cut it into small pieces)
  6. Grated ginger – 1/4 tsp
  7. Chili powder – 1/4 tsp
  8. Coriander powder – 1/4 tsp
  9. Turmeric powder – 1/8 tsp
  10. Cooking oil – 1 tbsp
  11. Salt to taste

For tempering

  1. Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp
  2. Cumin seeds – 1/2 tsp
  3. Split urad dal – 1 tbsp
  4. Curry leaves – 2

How to make

  • Heat a pan on high heat
  • Pour the oil and add the mustard seeds
  • Once mustard seeds crackles, add the cumin seeds, urad dal and curry leaves
  • Add the onion, ginger and green chili and saute for a minute
  • Add the the cabbage and saute for 2 minutes
  • Add the spices and salt and mix well
  • Then add the cooked green gram and mix it
  • Finally add the coconut and saute for one more minute
  • Now it should be ready to serve
