Senai Kizhangu (Yam) Kootu

I already posted the recipe of yam roast. This one is a different kind of preparation and it is a common side dish for rice in our hometown.

Ingredients

  • Fresh or Frozen yam ———– 300 g
  • Shallots ——————————— 10
  • Grated coconut ——————– 1/3 cup
  • Chili powder ————————- 1/4 tsp
  • Turmeric powder —————– 1/4 tsp
  • Garam masala powder ——– 1/4 tsp
  • For Grinding
    • Grated coconut —————- 1/3 cup
    • Cumin seeds ——————– 1/2 tsp
    • Garlic pods ———————– 4
  • For Tempering
    • Cooking oil ———————– 2 tsp
    • Mustard seeds —————– 1/2 tsp
    • Urad dal —————————- 1/2 tsp
    • Cumin seeds ——————– 1/2 tsp
    • Curry leaf ————————– 1 spring

How to make

  • Place a pan on medium heat stove
  • Add oil and mustard seeds
  • Once it crackles, add the urad dal, curry leaf and the sliced shallots
  • Add the yam pieces, spice powders and 1/2 cup of water
  • Cook it until the yam pieces are well cooked (around 15 minutes)
  • In the meantime, make the coconut paste
  • Grind all things in the grinding list into a coarse mixture using a mixer/blender
  • Add this coconut mixture in the pan
  • Cook for 3 more minutes and switch off the stove
  • Now it should be ready to eat
  • Serve it with rice
