Squid Fish (Kanava) Varuval

Whenever we buy squid fish, I usually make this dish. If you like this fish (I know some people don’t eat squid), definitely give it a try. My mom usually makes the squid fish curry. When we were children, we used to play with the squid fish circles while eating it, by wearing them on our fingers like rings. Looking back on those memories, it is kind of silly, but my sisters and I really enjoyed every time when our mother made the squid fish curry. I will post the curry recipe later, but here is a side-dish made with squid.

Ingredients

  • Squid fish ————————————- 1 lb
  • Onion medium size ——————– 1(cubed)
  • Tomato small ——————————- 1 (cubed)
  • Minced ginger and garlic ———– 1 tabs
  • Grated coconut —————————- 1/4 cup
  • Green chilies ——————————- 2
  • Tamarind water ————————– 2 tabs
  • Chili powder ——————————– 1/2 tsp
  • Garam masala powder ————– a pinch
  • Coriander powder ———————– 1 tsp
  • Salt to taste
  • For Tempering
    • Cooking oil —————————– 1 tabs
    • Curry leaves ————————– 4 springs
    • Mustard seeds ———————– 1/2 tsp

How to make

  • Clean the squid fish
  • Cook the cleaned squid fish with little turmeric powder in a pressure cooker for 10 minutes over medium heat (no need to wait for the whistle)
  • Switch off the stove and wait for it to cool down
  • Now open the pressure cooker and take out the squids and cut them into small circles
  • Heat oil in a pan over medium heat
  • Now add the mustard seeds and wait until it crackles, then add the curry leaves
  • Add the onion, green chilies, tomato, ginger and garlic and stir fry for about five minutes
  • Then add all the spice powders and mix them well
  • Now add the squid pieces and saute for about four minutes
  • Then add the tamarind juice and cook for two minutes
  • Now add the grated coconut, mix them well and cook for couple of more minutes
  • Switch off the stove
  • Now it is ready to serve
