Cracked Wheat Ela Ada

This is a delicious and healthy evening snack. It is very popular in Kerala. Usually Ada is made from rice, but this Ela Ada is made from cracked wheat. There are many different kinds of stuffing. Today I used the sweet coconut stuffing. It is so simple to make, ok, lets see the recipe.

  • Coarse cracked wheat ————— 1/2 cup
  • Powdered jaggery ———————- 1/2 cup
  • Grated coconut ————————— about 3/4 cup
  • Banana leaf ——————————— 7 small pieces
  • Cardamom ———————————- 4 (powdered)
  • Salt ———————————————– 1/8 tsp

About The Banana Leaves

  • I bought the banana leaf from Indian grocery store and cut it into small pieces
  • I stored the leftover banana leaf pieces in the freezer, which I can use later

How To Make

  • Soak the cracked wheat for about five hours
  • Then drain the water, add salt and grind it into a fine paste using a mixer/blender
  • Place a pan on medium heat, add the jaggery powder and two table spoon of water
  • Once it starts to boil, add the grated coconut and cardamom powder
  • Stir it until it becomes a thick paste (about 5 minutes)
  • Now spread a thin layer of paste on the banana leaf pieces (for spreading, touch your fingers in water or dip the back of the spoon into the water and spread it, so that it won’t stick)
  • Place little bit of sweet coconut paste on one side of the Ela Ada and fold them into half
  • Place a steamer pot in high heat and bring the water to boil
  • Now place all the Ela Ada into the steamer plate and reduce the heat to medium
  • Cook it for about 20 minutes and turn off the stove
  • Now the very tasty Ella Ada is ready to serve

  • When grinding the cracked wheat, no need to add water, if you feel it is not grinding well then add a little bit of water
  • From the above measurement, you will get seven Ela Ada
  • I used the Udupi jaggery powder
  • For cracked wheat, I used the SWAD wheat cracked coarse
  • This time I used fresh banana leaves, but you can use the frozen ones as well
